Public Hearing Set to discuss Moratorium on Data Centers and the like on February 11th at 6pm.

A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A PUBLIC HEARING ON A PROPOSED MORATORIUM ORDINANCE REGULATING DATA CENTERS, CRYPTOCURRENCY MINING FACILITIES, AND SERVER FARMS
WHEREAS, the Town of Canton Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen is considering the adoption of a temporary development moratorium pursuant to N.C. Gen. Stat. § 160D-107; and
WHEREAS, the proposed moratorium would apply to the acceptance, processing, or approval of applications for development permits related to data centers, cryptocurrency mining facilities, and server farms within the Town’s planning and zoning jurisdiction; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the moratorium is to allow the Town sufficient time to study the potential impacts of such high-intensity digital infrastructure on public infrastructure, environmental resources, land use compatibility, and community character, and to consider appropriate amendments to the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance; and
WHEREAS, prior to adopting a development moratorium, the Town is required to hold a public hearing and receive public comment on the proposed ordinance;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen of the Town of Canton that:
- A public hearing shall be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Canton Town Hall, located at 85 Summer Street, to receive public input on the proposed Moratorium Ordinance concerning data centers, cryptocurrency mining facilities, and server farms.
- The Town Clerk is directed to publish notice of the public hearing in accordance with N.C. Gen. Stat. § 160D-601, including publication at least ten (10) days prior to the hearing date.
- A copy of the proposed ordinance shall be made available for public inspection at the Town Clerk’s office and on the Town’s official website.
