Helene Flood Info, Town Notices

Forecast of Heavy Rainfall and Potential for Flooding for the Town of Canton

The Town of Canton is issuing a public weather advisory in light of the National Weather Service’s forecast predicting heavy rainfall over the next few days, which may lead to localized flooding in various areas.

Forecast Overview:

Beginning this week, the region is expected to experience significant rainfall, with total accumulations projected to exceed 4 or more inches of rainfall.  This weather pattern is anticipated to continue through the weekend. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as conditions may deteriorate rapidly.

Potential Impacts:
  • Flash Flooding: Areas near rivers, streams, and low-lying regions may be susceptible to flash flooding. Residents should be prepared for rapidly rising water levels.
  • Road Conditions: Expect hazardous driving conditions. Hydroplaning is a concern, and local authorities may close certain roads to ensure public safety.
  • Power Outages: Wind and rain may lead to potential power outages. Residents are urged to prepare emergency kits that include essential supplies, flashlights, and batteries.
Safety Precautions:
  1. Stay Informed: Keep up to date with local weather reports and heed any warnings or instructions from authorities.
  2. Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads and paths. It only takes a small amount of water to pose a serious risk.
  3. Emergency Preparedness: Prepare an emergency plan for you and your family, and ensure you have the necessary supplies on hand.
Resources:

For timely updates, residents can sign up for Canton Alerts at cantonnc.com/canton-alerts/ or by emailing bproctor@cantonnc.com with their full name, email, phone number, and how they would like to receive alerts (text, voice, email).

The Town of Canton urges all residents to take this weather advisory seriously and prepare accordingly. Your safety is our highest priority, and we are currently implementing safety measures to better serve our community during the forecasted weather!  Please take care and stay safe.
