Canton, NC (pop 4,350+) is seeking an experienced and qualified professional to serve in the position of Chief of Police. After 30 years of dedicated service to the Canton Police Department and Canton citizens, the current Chief of Police is retiring effective March 31st. The Canton Police Department is currently comprised of 15 full-time officers, 2 part-time officers, 4 civilian tele-communicators and 1 administrative assistant/records clerk and operates under a $1.65 Million departmental budget. The Chief of Police will be responsible for the administration and supervision of the department as well as, charged with planning, directing, managing and overseeing the day-to-day activities of the Police Department. The selected candidate for this position will work closely with the Town Manager in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policies and priorities for each assigned service and/or operational area including crime and drug prevention operations, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, etc. Candidates for the position are required to have a minimum of 10 years in law enforcement, must currently be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of North Carolina by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission, and must meet the additional requirements listed in the full job description. A strong commitment to community-oriented policing, knowledge and ability to work with other agencies at the local, state and federal levels, and excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills are expected.
