The Board of Aldermen/women is responsible for selecting all members. Selections will be made based on the information contained within your application. In some cases, an interview may be requested.
Below is a brief summary of each of the Town of Canton’s Special Boards and Commissions. Minutes from meetings are provided where applicable.
PLANNING BOARD
The Town of Canton’s Planning Board is an advisory authority to the Town of Canton’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen/women.
The Planning Board prepares and submits zoning ordinances and maps to the Town Board for consideration and possible adoption. The Planning Board may initiate from time to time, proposals for amendments of the zoning ordinances, based upon its studies and comprehensive plan. The Planning Board is also charged with reviewing plans in certain new development/re-development situations to ensure that the proposed development meets the principles and requirements of the Town’s Code of Ordinances, etc.
ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
The Town of Canton’s Zoning Board of Adjustment is charged with administrative review to hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there has been an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the Zoning Administrator and/or any other designee of his/her as it relates to the Town of Canton’s Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Board of Adjustment also has the power and duty to hear and decide special exceptions to the terms of the Zoning Ordinance under certain circumstances. The Zoning Board of Adjustment is also able to hear and rule on variance requests. A variance may be granted in such individual case of unnecessary hardship upon a finding by the Board of Adjustment that all of a number of conditions exists.
HISTORICAL COMMISSION
The Town of Canton’s Historical Commission formulates ideas and concepts for historic preservation programs, projects, and plans; and presents recommendations to the Board of Aldermen/women. The Historical Commission initiates, promotes and assists in the implementation of programs of historic significance in the Town. It additionally oversees, coordinates, and implements the historic preservation programs that will preserve buildings, records, documents, photographs, and other items of historical significance to the Town.
CAMP HOPE COMMISSION
The Town of Canton’s Camp Hope Commission advises the Board of Aldermen/women and the Town Manager on the general management and long range planning needs pertaining to Camp Hope in order to support its preservation for public use in perpetuity and ensure proper stewardship.
